Support
A small studio, so support is a person reading an email rather than a ticket queue. Everything below is answered honestly, including the parts we cannot do anything about.
Contact us
Email [email protected] and put Synonym Stack in the subject line. That reaches the people who make the app. There is no phone number and no live chat, and we would rather say so than list one that nobody answers.
Things worth including if you have them: the iPhone model, the iOS version, what you were doing when it went wrong, and a screenshot. For anything about a payment, the date of purchase and which plan you chose is usually enough for Apple's records to make sense.
We answer in one business day in most cases. Australian time zone, so a message sent in the American evening is read the next morning.
Reporting a bug, or a bad word pairing
These are two different reports and both are wanted. A bug is the app behaving wrongly. A bad pairing is the word bank being unfair: a sentence that does not narrow the word to one sense, or two tiles that are both defensible. Send the word, the sentence, and the answer you expected.
Word bank corrections go into the bank itself, which the app and the library on this site both read, so a fix lands in both places at once.
Privacy and data
There is no account, no sign up and no profile. If you want the detail of what the app and this website do and do not collect, it is written out on the privacy page rather than summarised here.
Common questions
- I paid for Plus and it is not showing. How do I restore it?
- Open Settings inside the app and tap Restore Purchases. That asks Apple for the receipts on the Apple ID you bought with, so make sure the device is signed in to that same Apple ID. If nothing comes back, email us with the date of purchase and we will look into it.
- How do I cancel or change my subscription?
- Subscriptions are billed by Apple, not by us, so they are managed in your own account: open the iOS Settings app, tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions, then Synonym Stack. You can switch plan or cancel there. Cancelling stops the next renewal and leaves your current period running. We cannot cancel a subscription on your behalf and Apple does not give us the ability to.
- How does the free trial work?
- The monthly and annual plans each carry a 7 day free trial for new subscribers. The weekly plan does not, because it is the impulse option. A trial converts into a paid period unless you cancel before it ends, and the app tells you which plan you have selected before you confirm.
- Will my progress follow me to a new iPhone?
- Yes, provided the new phone is signed in to the same iCloud account. Streaks, level, word journal, climb stars and unlocked packs are stored in Apple iCloud key value storage, which means they live in your own iCloud rather than on a server of ours. There is no account to create with us and no password to lose.
- I have turned notifications off and I want the daily reminder back.
- Notification permission is asked for once, in the app, and never on launch. If you declined or later turned it off, open the iOS Settings app, find Synonym Stack, tap Notifications and allow them. The app only sends the daily stack reminder and the streak nudge, and nothing is sent if you leave permission off.
- Why did the game mark my answer wrong when it looked like a synonym?
- Because the sentence pins the word to one sense, and the word you picked is a synonym of a different sense. That is the single most common complaint about synonym quizzes and it is the reason this one shows the reason afterwards. If you think an entry is genuinely unfair, send us the word and we will look at the entry itself.
- A word pairing on the site or in the game looks wrong. What do you do about it?
- We fix the bank. The app and this website read the same word bank file, so a correction lands in both at the next release. Email the word, the sentence and what you think is wrong with it, and you will get a reply from a person.
- Does the app work offline?
- The words do. The whole bank ships inside the app, so play works with no connection. Advertising, iCloud syncing and the App Store side of a subscription all need a connection to do their job.
- Is there an Android or iPad version?
- Not today. Synonym Stack is an iPhone app. The word library on this website works on any device with a browser, which is the closest thing to an Android version that currently exists.
